Mälsaker Castle - Mälsåkers Slott

Mälsåker castle is situated 20 km north of Mariefred and 80 km west of Stockholm. Drive towards  Stallarholmen, turn right towards Ytterselö and then follow the signs to Mälsåker castle. Beware of the elks, wild-pigs and other wild animals and of the race horses nearby the castle.

The history of Mälsåker stretches back to the Middle Ages when it probably was a simple stone house. The castle is situated on Selaön in Mälaren. Mälaren is the third largest lake of Sweden. Selaön is known for its many ancient monuments. During the Swedish age of greatness in the 17th century the house was owned by the Soop family. The famous architect Nikodemus Tessin sr. was engaged to alter the house into one of the grandest baroque castles in Sweden. The house was extended, wings were added and a terrace with stairs facing the see. During the 18th century the interiors were partly changed into rococo.
At the end of the 19th century the house was modernized with electricity, water and central heating.

The 1940s turned out to be the most dramatic decennium of Mälsåker.1943-1945 Mälsåker was owned by the State of Norway used for training of approximately 2000 soldiers living in hutments. The castle was used as office and accommodation for officers and commands. A very cold day in January 1945 all home fires are burning hard, the chimney shaft cracks, the roof catches fire and the catastrophe is a fact. The roof fell in and the richly ornamented stucco ceilings on the third floor fell in and were destroyed. A great deal of the noble baroque castle had turned into a ruin.

In the 1990s Mälsåker started to regain its former glory. A building workshop was established and parts of the castle were restored using old building techniques and traditional materials. Stucco ceilings were re-created as was the beautiful patterned wooden floors.

There is an exhibition from the “Norway-era”, several artists show their work in the beautiful rooms. During summer 2009 there will be different music events in the big ball room. You are welcome to have some refreshments in the newly established café- and exhibition building.

Grafikens Hus was inaugurated on May 8th, 1996, by His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf as a quite new national and international centre for fine art printmaking.

Grafikens Hus is housed in an old barn-cum-stables called Kungsladugården (Royal Barn) dating back to the days of King Gustav Vasa in the sixteenth century, close to Gripsholm Castle in the town of Mariefred, sixty-five kilometres from Stockholm. Like many similar buildings still found all over the Nordic countries, the barn served many purposes, and apart from the usual hayloft and storage spaces, also housed the livestock of the farm or estate, including stables for both working and carriage horses. Today Kungsladugården is listed and classed as a historic building. The renovation of the southern part of the building and converting it into Grafikens Hus was carried out by Jan Lisinski, Palace Architect and Professor of Architectural Restoration with the architectural firm of Arksam in Stockholm.

The surface area of 2000 square metres provides space for several large exhibition halls and workshops for the various techniques of printmaking. There is also a large print collection and an art library, as well as a shop and a café. Activities in the centre also include seminars, courses and musical events.

Grafikens Hus was created by a group of enthusiastic artists and others interested in art, among the latter those with knowledge of marketing, museum management, business and law.



The artistic core of Grafikens Hus are 400 living Swedish printmaking artists whose active participation and part-ownership are the basis of all the activities, in both the centre workshops and the exhibition halls. The artists became part-owners and shareholders in Grafikens Hus in that each one of them acquired what is called a "Konstnärsaktie" (Artist's share or a "K-share"). They paid for the share with their own prints, and this increased the Grafikens Hus Collection by 1,200 prints. Recently, 200 more K-shares have been offered to artists in the Nordic countries, Russia, the Baltic States, Poland and Germany.

Gripsholm Castle is one of Sweden’s ten royal palaces and is regarded as one of Sweden´s finest historical monuments. Its beautiful situation near the town of Mariefred by the lake Mälaren makes this a fantastic day excursion.

The castle was built by King Gustav Vasa in 1537 and later extended by Gustav III. The location earlier housed a fortress from the late 1300´s belonging to a wealthy family, but was confiscated by Gustav Vasa in 1526. The fortress was torned down and the Gripsholm Castle was built on the same spot.

Since Gustav Vasa, this magnificient castle has belonged to the Royal Swedish Family, and served as its residence until 1713. It then served as a prison until King Gustav III decided to renovate the building in 1773.

Today the castle is a historical museum well worth a visit, including the Governmental collection of portraits.
